Kathmandu, Two-and-a-half-year-old Aryatara Shakya has been formally installed as Nepal’s new Rajkanya Kumari, or Royal Living Goddess. In a special religious ceremony held on Tuesday at the historic Kumari Ghar in Basantapur, Kathmandu, Aryatara was officially enthroned. From now on, she will hold a revered place in the spiritual consciousness of Nepali society as a living deity.

Aryatara succeeds the outgoing Kumari, Trishna Shakya, who stepped down from the role upon entering adolescence, in accordance with tradition. She was bid farewell with special rituals and a musical procession, marking the ceremonial end of her Kumari tenure.

The appointment of a Royal Kumari is far from ordinary. Believed to be the living embodiment of the Hindu goddess Taleju, the selection process for the Kumari is deeply rooted in ancient tantric practices, astrological evaluations, and religious criteria.
The process involves the participation of Taleju Temple’s chief priest, members of the Panchang Committee, representatives of the Guthi (religious trusts), and astrologers.

A crucial criterion is that the Kumari must belong to the Shakya clan, and both parents must be local residents of Kathmandu from the same community.

Aryatara was chosen based on the presence of 32 traditional physical and spiritual attributes required in a Kumari. These include beauty, calm demeanor, perfect and complete teeth, unblemished and scar-free skin, a divine aura in appearance, and a unique display of fearlessness.

With Aryatara’s selection, Nepal’s centuries-old Kumari tradition is once again passed to a new generation. She will be worshipped and revered by both Hindu and Buddhist devotees alike. The Royal Kumari continues to serve as a powerful symbol of Nepal’s religious, cultural, and national identity.
