National ID Department’s Website hacked; Data Claimed Safe

Kathmandu . A cyberattack has disrupted the official website of Nepal’s National ID and Registration Department, rendering the portal inaccessible since Tuesday. Home Ministry Spokesperson and Joint Secretary Anand Kafle confirmed the breach, stating that technicians are currently working to restore the system. According to him, preliminary assessments suggest that no sensitive data has been compromised.

Earlier, anyone attempting to access the site was greeted with a message demanding the release of Durga Prasai within 24 hours. That message has since been removed. Authorities have yet to determine who carried out the attack or from where, and the investigation is ongoing.

Officials clarified that the hacked portal does not store National ID information; it only contains general documents, which they say remain intact. The incident comes shortly after the Election Commission linked voter registration procedures with National ID details.
