Kathmandu,  Following the suspension of KP Sharma Oli’s passport and the initiation of an investigation against Mahesh Basnet, the Youth Association, a sister organization of the CPN-UML, has issued a statement expressing strong objections.

The Youth Association has opposed the government's decision to recommend the suspension of party chairman and former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli’s passport. It has also accused the government of launching a retaliatory investigation against Mahesh Basnet. Association President Kshitij Thebe released a statement voicing concerns over both matters.

Pressure has reportedly been mounting to arrest Oli, accusing him of ordering police to open fire during the recent Gen Z protests. The investigation commission formed to probe the events of Bhadra 23 and 24 (early September) is reportedly preparing to summon Oli for questioning after Dashain. According to the statement, the commission recommended the passport suspension in the preliminary phase of the investigation, allegedly based on suspicion and bias.

“Our organization expresses deep concern and objection to the government’s decision to suspend the passport of respected leader and former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli,” the statement read.
“The investigation commission formed in 2082 (2025) to look into the Bhadra 23 and 24 incidents made the decision purely based on suspicion and prejudice, without any evidence or legal basis, even in the initial phase of the inquiry.”

A few days ago, the inquiry commission had decided to suspend the passports of KP Oli, Ramesh Lekhak, Chhabilal Rizal, and a few other individuals, also restricting their foreign travel. The UML party has also strongly objected to this move by the government.

Similarly, the Youth Association has claimed that a case is being pursued against UML Politburo member Mahesh Basnet in a vindictive manner.

“There are reports of retaliatory legal action being initiated against Comrade Mahesh Basnet. We strongly urge the government not to pursue such vindictive actions and warn that such activities will be counterproductive for the current government,” the statement added.

The District Government Attorney’s Office has sent a letter to the Cyber Bureau of Nepal Police to initiate an investigation against Basnet under the Electronic Transactions Act. The letter is based on a complaint filed by a woman.
