Kathmandu, The Kathmandu Valley Mayors’ Forum has announced a financial commitment of Rs 5 crore to support the reconstruction of Singha Durbar, one of Nepal's most iconic government buildings, damaged during the recent Gen-Z movement protests.
In a meeting held on Asoj 9 at Godawari Municipality, the forum expressed strong condemnation of the violent and anarchic activities during the protests, including vandalism and arson targeting Singha Durbar, the Parliament building, Supreme Court, police offices, and municipal buildings.
The forum stressed that such acts do not reflect the true intentions of the Gen-Z generation and called the incidents an attack on democratic values, constitutional order, and national sovereignty. It urged the government to conduct a thorough investigation and take the strictest legal actions against those responsible.
The Forum will also provide Rs 1 crore to the Valley Police Office to help strengthen security in the Kathmandu Valley.
Further assistance will be given to damaged police stations and municipalities to help restore public services.
The Forum also extended condolences to those who lost their lives during the protests and wished for the speedy recovery of the injured.
While condemning the violence, the Forum expressed solidarity with the youth who are raising voices for good governance and an end to corruption, provided those voices are raised through peaceful and democratic means.
The Forum appreciated the initiatives taken by the President during this crisis and thanked her for her leadership.
The meeting was attended by chiefs and deputy chiefs of all 18 municipalities and 3 rural municipalities within the Valley. A joint statement by Forum Chair Chiribabu Maharjan and General Secretary Ghanshyam Giri reaffirmed the commitment to inter-municipal cooperation, improved service delivery, and the protection of public property.
They also appealed to all community groups and local institutions to act with restraint and unity during such difficult times.
