Kathmandu, Businesses and borrowers affected by the September 9 (Bhadra 24) Gen-Z protests will now get access to loan rescheduling and restructuring facilities until mid-January 2026 (end of Poush 2082).
The Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB) issued a fresh circular to banks and financial institutions, allowing temporary relief to those impacted by the unrest. Under the directive, loans that are rescheduled or restructured will retain the same loan classification they had as of mid-July 2025 (Ashad-end 2082).
“Any loan modified under this scheme must maintain its previous classification, and loss provisioning should follow accordingly,” the NRB stated in the circular.
This facility covers not only businesses directly affected during the protests but also those indirectly impacted through supply chains or business linkages (forward/backward linkages).
To qualify, banks must assess the actual extent of business disruption, and borrowers must have paid at least 5% of the interest due. Once confirmed, banks can offer restructuring support.
In a separate provision, NRB has extended the same loan restructuring support to businesses impacted by recent natural disasters and border trade disruptions at Rasuwa and Tatopani customs checkpoints.
If affected borrowers request assistance, banks can offer restructuring options upon verifying the extent of the business impact. This facility is also valid until Poush-end 2082 (mid-January 2026).
