Kathmandu, Newly appointed Minister for Education, Science and Technology, Mahabir Pun, emphasized the need for concrete action over the mere formation of committees, as he assumed office on Monday.

During the handover ceremony at the Ministry, officials requested his signature to form new think tank committees in four priority areas. However, Minister Pun expressed concern over the lack of financial resources and questioned the effectiveness of such committees in the past.

“Committees alone won’t bring results. First, we need to secure funding. Ministries have been stuck for years because of the lack of money,” he said. He also questioned whether immediate approval of such proposals without discussion was necessary.

Pun further remarked that he has witnessed the Ministry of Science for many years but has seen little progress. “So many committees have been formed. They meet a few times, sign attendance sheets, and nothing happens. I don’t want that. Let’s do real work, even if small,” he added.

Speaking to journalists, Pun stated that he had not entered politics with a formal plan and became a minister unexpectedly. “Don’t ask me what I’ll do right now. I was busy selling books to raise funds for innovation — now I’m here,” he said. He added that his focus would be on innovation, research, and practical science and technology initiatives.

He also stated he doesn't desire ministerial perks or formalities. “I won’t be using the minister’s benefits. If there’s a kitchen at the ministry, I’ll sleep there,” he said.

On the topic of free education, he responded frankly: “Just because I’m a minister doesn’t mean I can provide free education overnight. I’m not a god — but I’ll try to do something meaningful.”
