Government Plans to Reassign Key Investigative Bodies to Respective Ministries

Sunday, September 21 2025

Kathmandu, The government is preparing to return three major investigative bodies, currently under the Prime Minister's Office, back to their respective ministries.

According to sources from the Ministry of Finance, Sunday’s cabinet meeting is expected to decide on placing the National Investigation Department under the Ministry of Home Affairs. Similarly, the Department of Money Laundering Investigation and the Revenue Investigation Department are set to return under the Ministry of Finance.

These departments were brought under the PM’s Office in 2019 by then-Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli, aiming to centralize power. However, since then, critics have pointed to weakened coordination and a shift from genuine investigation to misuse of authority.

Finance Ministry sources say the restructuring aims to restore effective governance and that a proposal to amend administrative regulations is already in motion.
