Prachanda Stresses Timely Elections to Avoid Political Instability

Kathmandu, Former Prime Minister and Chairman of the CPN (Maoist Centre), Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’, has emphasized that the upcoming elections must be held on schedule. In a video statement released Thursday, he said that timely elections are essential to strengthen democratic practices and to prevent the country from falling into further instability.

Prachanda warned that conspiracies against the country and the people are not yet over. “Attempts to undermine the interim government have already begun. There may be organized efforts to disrupt the elections and push the country toward more chaos,” he said. “We want the elections to be held peacefully and on the announced date.”

In his address, Prachanda acknowledged past shortcomings and said that both the party and its leadership are in the process of self-correction. “Our ideology and policies weren’t wrong, but we made mistakes in implementation,” he admitted.

He also claimed that while leading the government, he never signed any anti-national agreements and has continued to fight against corruption. However, he admitted that the party’s performance fell short of public expectations and expressed his commitment to improving. He further shared that internal discussions about leadership transition within the party have already begun.

Prachanda warned that any deviation from the constitution and democratic republicanism would lead the country not toward solutions but toward deeper crises. “The only alternative to democracy is a more advanced form of democracy. Protecting the constitution and democracy is essential for safeguarding national sovereignty — and this is a shared responsibility of all Nepalis,” he stated.

He called on all democratic forces to remain vigilant against any organized attempts to derail the elections or to destabilize the interim government.
