Kathmandu, Newly appointed Prime Minister Sushila Karki has clarified that she took on the responsibility of the premiership not by choice, but due to compelling circumstances. She made this statement while addressing government employees, security personnel, and other attendees during a program held at Singha Durbar after assuming office on Sunday.

She stated that her priorities include controlling the growing corruption in the country, making public service delivery more effective, and advancing the governance system in line with the aspirations of the new generation.

Prime Minister Karki said, “This is not my personal desire. There were calls from the streets and various places urging me to take responsibility. I came into this position out of compulsion, not to enjoy the luxuries of power.”

Referring to the recent protests that disrupted public life, she revealed that within just 27 hours, the country suffered significant loss of life and property. She mentioned the destruction caused by fires in police posts, courts, and even Singha Durbar, and highlighted how the loss of evidence and records has created further challenges.

“We can rebuild physical structures, but when evidence is lost, we are left with nothing,” she remarked.

She pointed out that violent activities were carried out in a planned manner targeting security agencies, and said that the situation has now necessitated the purchase of new security vehicles. Expressing embarrassment over recent events, she stated that those involved in such acts cannot be considered true Nepalis.

“If such acts were indeed committed by Nepalis, it is a matter of deep concern. Everyone must come together for the country’s reconstruction,” she urged.

Prime Minister Karki also expressed suspicion of a possible conspiracy behind the incidents and assured that an investigation will be conducted, and the guilty will not escape accountability.

“Whatever anyone has done, there will definitely be an investigation,” she said.

She shared her plan to involve everyone in national reconstruction efforts over the next six months and to hand over power to elected representatives afterward.

“I am committed to handing over responsibility to a democratically elected government, but this will not be possible without your support. I am counting on your cooperation,” Prime Minister Karki said.

Suggesting the construction of temporary structures using bamboo poles in the Terai region, she reminded everyone of the incredible capacity of Nepalis for rebuilding.

In conclusion, Prime Minister Karki emphasized the need for unity and called for a collective response against criminal activities that threaten the country.
